Wyze Base Station
Wyze Base Station

Unlike other Wyze cameras, the outdoor model requires to be connected to its Base Station which will act as a communication hub for your Wyze Cam Outdoor and it is necessary for it to talk to your network in order to allow you access the live stream, send notifications to your smartphone and store clips on the cloud.

This Base Station has a micro SD card port for people who want to store their footage locally, it will also extend the Wifi signals to let it reach the outdoor cam so which means more flexibility with placement, you can use it in “Travel Mode” to connect to your camera without internet access.

Our main focus in this article is to teach you how to connect the Wyze Base Station to wifi and walk you through solutions to setup issues you may encounter during the process.

Base Station set up troubleshooting.

Sometimes you may face some issues when you Set up the Base Station so in this section I will walk you through the tips and tricks that you can implement in case you encounter that kind of problem.

Important: Before implementing any solution make sure that the Base Station has power, your network has an internet connection and your internet subscription hasn’t expired yet and the smartphone or tablet you’re using is on the same network that the Base Station is trying to connect to.

If all these conditions are set and the Base Station can’t connect try the tips cited below:

  1. Make sure your Wyze app is updated.
  2. Check if you’re interacting with the right Base Station if you have more than one.
  3. If you are using a Firewall or a VPN on your network, please disable it for the duration of the setup process.
  4. Verify the status light color to make sure the Base Station is set up and functional. It should be solid blue.
  5. Try another Ethernet cable if you have one.
  6. If all these tips don’t work for you contact Wyze customer service.

Connect the Wyze base station wirelessly.

As we mentioned before the Ethernet cable is mandatory only during the setup process when connecting your Base Station to your network for the first time then you can unplug it and move to a wireless mode.

Note: Wyze Base Station needs to be connected to a 2.4 GHz WiFi network with a WPA/WPA2 protocol.

So here’s how to switch into a wireless connection:

How to change the Wifi that your Base Station is connected to?

For some reason, you may want to connect your Base Station to another network and you need to do that on the app, here’s how:

  1. Launch the Wyze app on Android or IOS devices.
  2. Select your Base Station.
  3. Click on Settings on the top right of the screen.
  4. Tap Device Info, then Wi-Fi Network.
  5. Follow on-screen steps to finish the setup.

Wifi coverage issues.

According to Wyze, The max range between the camera and Base Station varies, but in an open, clear field, they can be up to 300 feet apart, this distance will shrink depending on the numbers and thickness of walls and doors and other kinds of obstacles.

So you need to find the best spot for your Base Station in order to assure a stable internet connection for your outdoor cam and get good Wifi signals from your home router.

But for some people who live in big houses, it’s difficult for them to find the perfect placement, so if you’re one of those I advise you to continue with an ethernet cable or add a Wifi extender to let the signal reach the Base Station.

You can also set up a mesh network that will provide a consistent connection, faster speeds, better reliability, and greater wireless coverage of your home than a conventional router would.

NetGear and Google Mesh are considered good brands to install in your smart home.
