Ring is an Amazon company that provides different smart security devices that help increase home safety including indoor & outdoor cameras that comes with so many features such as 1080P video quality with color night vision, customizable motion zones, record and capture videos, without forgetting remote control ability and many more.

Sometimes the owner of this camera wants to sell it, give it to another person, or a renter and he asks what are the steps to take to transfer the Ring camera safely.

Transferring your Ring cam to a new owner goes through different steps including saving your recorded footage, deleting all your payment information and canceling your subscription, implementing a factory reset, and giving it to the new owner to let him add his account and enjoy the cam.

Don’t worry this article will guide you through all the steps by showing you detailed instructions in order to let you transfer your cam easily without having to rely on a technical person or worry about your personal info.

Note: You can apply the same steps to transfer any Ring device including your Ring doorbell, Alarm, and so on.

Who can transfer the Ring cam to a new owner?

The Ring account can be managed by many users who have different roles and abilities, including the owner who has the highest level of access to the device, the shared user who has limited abilities, and then the guest user who has no control over the Ring account or camera.

Among these three roles, the owner is the only one with the power to delete payment information and cancel the protection subscription, as well as delete all users who are currently accessing the camera, so he is responsible for the transfer of the Ring cam to a new owner.

Step 1: Download your recorded footage.

If you estimate that you have important clips recorded by your Ring cam and you may need them in the future I recommend downloading them because when you factory reset the cam and transfer it to a new owner all this footage will be lost and you will never get access to it again.

here’s how to download the footage from on a computer:

  1. Log into your web account at ring.com/account.
  2. Select the History tab on the top left.
  3. Open the video you want to download.
  4. Select the video download icon on the bottom right.
    • It is an arrow that is pointing over a vertical line.
    • The icon will turn blue and the video will automatically download to your computer.

And here’s how to download footage from your Ring mobile app:

  1. Open your Ring app.
  2. Tap the three lines on the top left.
  3. Tap History.
  4. Scroll to the video you want to share.
  5. Tap the three dots on the far right.
  6. Tap the Share option that appears on the screen.
  7. Tap the blue Share button.
  8. A menu will pop up, tap on the download icon to download the footage on your mobile.

Step2: Delete all shared users.

When shared users have access to your Ring cam they’ll have the possibility to access live view, view and share video clips, view event history, receive and control notifications, so you need to delete them before transferring your device.

Here’s how to delete a shared user:

  1. In the Ring app, tap on the three lines on the Dashboard screen.
  2. If you have more than one Location with Ring devices, make sure you’re at the correct location.
    • Tap on the address at the top of the menu.
    • Tap the Location where the device is located.
  3. Tap Shared Users.
  4. Tap the Shared User that you would like to edit.
  5. Tap Delete
  6. Tap Save.

Note: Use these steps to delete all your shared users that are accessing the cam.

Step 3: Delete your payment information.

Deleting your payment details and information is very important in order to avoid getting charged any more for future billing charges by Ring, or avoid any future dispute with the future owner of the Ring device.

Important: The payment details can be deleted only from the Ring website, not the app.

Here are the instructions that you need to follow:

  1. Go to Ring.com
  2. Tap on login on the upper right side of the page.
  3. Login using the same email and password that you use for your Ring app.
  4. Once you’re logged in, click on your name on the top right corner of the screen.
  5. Then click on Account.
  6. If you have a payment method attached to your account find the “credit card on file” option.
  7. Tap the “X” icon to delete it from your account.

Note: make sure to delete all your credit cards from your account.

Step 4: Cancel your Ring protection plan.

According to Ring, deleting the credit card attached to Ring Protect Plan, by removing it, will cause your Ring Protect Plan to be canceled.

But you can start with canceling your protection plan before removing your payment info by following the instructions below:

  1. Go to ring.com and log into your account.
  2. Select your existing plan on the left.
  3. Select Cancel Plan.
  4. Choose the reason for cancellation.
  5. Choose when to cancel the plan (make sure to cancel now not at the end of your billing cycle).
  6. Confirm cancellation.

If you cancel the subscription before the end of the billing cycle Ring will offer a refund for the time you aren’t using their subscription for cloud video storage.

Annual Plans: If you cancel your annual Ring Protect plan at any time during your subscription period, your annual plan will be prorated over 12 months.

Monthly Plans: If you cancel your monthly Ring Protect plan at any time during your subscription period, your monthly plan will be prorated over for the remaining days.

You can contact Ring customer support through the Live chat on their website or the mobile app, or call them directly at the number you find on their website (the phone number based on your location).

Step 4: Remove the Ring Cam from the app.

Now you’ll go and delete the Ring Cam from your Ring app in order to release the ownership of this device if you’re giving, moving, or selling it to another person.

Important: If the original owner of the Ring cam passed away there are certain legal requirements you will need to fulfill in order to transfer ownership of the account or the device.

Here are the steps to follow in order to delete your camera:

  1. Open the Ring app.
  2. Tap the three lines on the top left.
  3. Tap Devices.
  4. Select the device you want to release from your ownership.
  5. Tap Device Settings.
  6. Tap General Settings.
  7. Select Remove this Device.

Now we can say that the Ring camera is no longer under your control and access it is impossible for you which makes the new owner free to set up his account and take control of his new device.

Step 5: Perform a factory reset (optional).

This step is not mandatory to do in order to let the new owner set up the Ring cam on his own but it’s considered as a safety step to make sure that all your information has been removed from the camera and the new owner will never get access to them.
