According to some research, the smart lighting market is projected to reach USD 27.7 billion by 2026 from USD 10.9 billion in 2021, it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 20.5% from 2021 to 2026.

The growth of this market is due to the benefits that smart bulbs bring such as energy-saving, remote control, integration with other connected home devices, and much more.

The LIFX bulbs are one of the best smart light bulbs on the market because they are easy to set up, don’t require a hub, and offer over 16 million colors, they can also be automated or work with a specific schedule.

In this article, we will address a very common problem with LIFX lamps, which is the connection issue.

This problem occurs for several reasons and we will explain how to solve it without resorting to a pro.

Solutions to fix the connection issue.

The problem of connecting with LIFX bulbs can be solved generally with 4 solutions: reset bulbs, turn on wall switches, restart your home router or turn off VPN and we will explain each of these solutions.

Reset the LIFX bulbs.

The first thing you do when your bulb is not connecting is to reset it and there are three ways to do that.

The first method is applicable with all LIFX lights except the LIFX original, so all you need do is follow the next steps:

  1. Start with the LIFX light on (You will need to have your light powered up when you start).
  2. Switch your light Off and On 5 times slowly and at a consistent interval (this can be done through the switch or by plugging and unplugging it).
  3. Your light will flash to signify that the bulb has been reset (it will flash different colors).

The second method concerns the original LIFX lights:

  1. Switch off the power supply to your lamp.
  2. Move the small switch located on the back of the bulb into the opposite position.
  3. Turn the power supply back on.
  4. Your light will flash signifying that the bulb has been reset.

The third method concern LIFX Z Strips and Beam you can always reset it the same way as we show you in the first method.

But also These models have a reset button on them so you can follow different steps to do it, so in order to reset them follow the next steps:

  1. Press the reset button for 10-15 seconds.
  2. Then the lights will flash different colors to lets you know that the light has been reset.

Check your home network and router.

Your LIFX bulbs rely on your internet connection to allow you to control them from your mobile app or your smart speaker such as Amazon Echo.

So if you reset your bulbs and nothing works here you may go to check your home network starting with your router.

Rebooting or power cycling your router may be a good solution to solve this issue, Rebooting your router cleans out the device’s short-term memory to keep it running more smoothly.

After power cycling your router I recommend you to check your internet on your mobile through a web search to make sure that the problem is no more coming from the router.

It’s important to change the frequency at a 2.4Ghz connection rather than 5Ghz, this step is crucial t make sure that your LIFX lamp can be connected over the network (The bulbs support only the 2.4 GHz frequency).

Check your wall switches.

Another issue that may cause your LIFX bulb to not connect is when it’s used with a traditional wall switch.

When someone turns off the light from the switch all the power will be cut off and your lamp won’t connect until you’ve flipped the switch back up.

If all people inside your house are used to turning on the lights from the wall switches, this may lead to the recurrence of this issue several times, so you can put a light switch guard to completely hide the switch.

You can solve this issue by installing a smart switch like “Lutron Caseta“.

Turn off the VPN.

Sometimes the VPN may be the cause as the VPN could definitely interfere with local network traffic, Which is how the app communicates with the lights (via local UDP packets).

So make sure to turn off your VPN on your IOS or Android device you’re using to control the smart light, then reboot your smartphone to get it connected.

Conclusion.

Finally, One of these solutions cited before will work with you so make sure to try them all, if you’re from a generation that is not comfortable with the technology you can ask another person to do it for you.
