Ecobee smart thermostat is a device that will help you manage the temperature inside your house remotely from your mobile, tablet or computer, and can be integrated with other connected home appliances in order to save you up to 23% annually on heating and cooling bills.

For some reason, people may want to transfer the ownership of the gadget and this step requires you to unregister a thermostat and delete it from your account on the thermostat screen, app or web portal.

In this article, we’re going to teach you how to unregister your Ecobee from the account before transferring it and how to re-register your thermostat as a new owner?

How do I unregister Ecobee and delete it from my account?

As mentioned below you need to remove the thermostat from your account before changing its ownership. You can follow one of the next methods in order to do that:

Unregister your Ecobee thermostat from the device screen.

  1. Wake up your thermostat and tap on the “Hamburger Menu” on the lower left corner of the screen.
  2. Scroll down on this menu and tap “Settings”.
  3. Choose “Reset” at the bottom of the list.
  4. Select “Reset Registration”, then tap on yes to confirm.

Note: You can also choose “Reset All” instead of “Reset registration” in order to reset your schedule and preferences because the new owner will generally not use the same configuration as you.

It will take a few seconds for the reset process to complete. When the reset process has finished you can then set up your device on the Ecobee App.

Unregister the thermostat from the Web Portal.

  1. Go to, then log in to your account.
  2. Select the icon that has an outline of a person with three lines.
  3. Click on “MY ACCOUNT”, then choose “UNREGISTER THERMOSTAT”.

Unregister Ecobee from the app.

  1. Open the app on your mobile or tablet.
  2. Sign in to your account.
  3. Select “Home” and then choose Ecobee you wish to unregister.
  4. Tap on the “Main Menu icon”.
  5. Choose “Device Settings” and then click on “Remove Device”.
  6. Select “Remove Device” again on the confirmation menu.

How do you register your Ecobee thermostat as a new owner?

After implementing the previous steps we showed you and unregistering your device, now the new owner needs to register this thermostat in order to control it and benefit from its features and he can do it from the app or the Web Portal and we’re going to explore both ways.

To register your device, you’ll need to get a 4-digit registration code from the thermostat’s screen. And here’s how to obtain it:

  1. Wake up your thermostat and tap on the “Hamburger Menu” on the bottom left of the screen.
  2. Select “Registration”.
  3. It says “2 Steps Left” under registration.
  4. You’ll be taken to a screen where you need to connect to your Wifi.
  5. Once the thermostat is connected to your home network, the code will then be displayed on its screen.

Note: This code is mandatory to register in the app or web portal but keep in mind that it is only valid for 1 hour once this time has passed, you need to follow the above procedure again to re-create the code.

Registering from the Ecobee app.

  1. Open the Ecobee app on your mobile or tablet.
  2. Select Create an account, then enter your name, email address, password and accept the Terms and Conditions.
  3. Tap on Create account.
  4. Enter your home name and enter your home address (this step is not mandatory but is beneficial if you want to get weather data of your region).
  5. Then select “Add a Device” and choose “Register a device”.
  6. Select your thermostat and enter the code we generated before.
  7. Enter your home details (Size, Type, bedrooms, floors, age) to help optimize heating and cooling.
  8. Tap Done.

Now your Ecobee is registered and accessible on the Web Portal, if you’re not sure about your home details you can skip it and set it up later.

Registering on the Web Portal.

  1. Go to this website on your web browser.
  2. Choose the model of the thermostat you want to register.
  3. Enter the 4-digit code in the field provided.
  4. Then Tap on “Next” at the bottom right of this screen.
  5. Set up your account by typing your personal info on the required field.
  6. Go back to your thermostat and tap OK at the bottom right corner to complete registration.

How does the new owner register an additional Ecobee on their account?

Maybe the new owner already has an account with a registered thermostat inside and he wants to add a new one. The next instructions show you how to add an additional thermostat:

Registering an additional thermostat using the app.

  1. Open the app on your smartphone or tablet.
  2. login to your account.
  3. Tap the + icon in the top right corner of the home screen.
  4. Choose “Register a device”, then select “Ecobee thermostat”.
  5. Enter the registration code generated by your thermostat.
  6. Tap “Next”.

Now your device is registered and you can benefit from it and access it from the app on your mobile and tablet or through the Web Portal.

Registering an additional thermostat using Web Portal.

  1. log in to to access the Web Portal.
  2. Select the icon that has an outline of a person with three lines.
  3. Then tap on “Add Thermostat”.
  4. Enter the registration code from your thermostat and then click “NEXT”.
  5. Proceed through the rest of the registration process by filling in the required fields.
  6. Go back to your thermostat and tap OK.

How the new owner can add new members?

The new owner may want to add other people to manage and control his smart thermostat with him which is something possible on Ecobee and he will be allowed to add up to 14 members. and here’s how to do that:

  1. Open your Ecobee app on mobile or tablet.
  2. Tap on “Account” at the bottom left corner of the screen.
  3. Choose “Manage Homes”.
  4. Select the home you want to invite someone to.
  5. Tap “Home Members”, Then “Invite New Member”.
  6. Then click on “Send invite”.

Send a unique invite link to add new members to your Ecobee home, these members can control your Ecobee device but can’t delete them or add new ones.

How to delete your Ecobee account?

When you transfer your thermostat to another owner and you have no other Ecobee devices in your home, you can permanently delete your account.

The account cannot be manually deleted by the user, so contact customer service, please make sure all devices are not registered to your account.

When contacting customer service, you will need to provide your email address, first and last name, and home address. They will then process your deletion within 24 hours.
