A Guide To Deleting Nest Cam Footage.

Nest Cam
Nest Cam

Nest company produces high-quality cameras that can help you make your house safer, also deterring or catching any suspicious person who may approach your property.

The Nest camera is powered by a battery that can last from 3 to 7 month depending on the usage and provide a full HD video quality that allows you to see the people’s faces clearly.

It also gives you the ability to speak with the person in front of your house and much more, all these characteristics make the nest cam one of the best security devices on the market.

The videos recorded by these cameras are stored in the cloud and you can watch them by going to the video history on your smartphone, tablet, or your computer. In this article, we’re going to show you how to delete the Nest camera footage.

How to delete Nest video clips and snapshots?

You can manage this cam through the Nest app or the Home app so you can use one of these two apps to delete the footage, so in order to do that you can follow the next steps:

  1. Open the Nest app and sign in to your account (go to home.nest.com if you’re on a computer).
  2. Then select the cam that has the video history you want to delete.
  3. Select settings then tap on “delete video history”.
  4. Finally tap the confirmation button to delete the video history.

By doing all of these steps, all of your saved clips and snapshots will be deleted and you won’t be able to access them again.

So make sure to create clips that you want to keep and download to your smartphone, or computer.

How footage will be automatically deleted?

Even if you don’t delete your recorded videos and clips manually your camera will not keep them forever and will delete them after a period of time. and let me show you how it does that:

  • Rolling video history: If you’re subscribed to “Nest aware” your camera will keep the footage for 30 days and if you’re subscribed to “Nest aware plus” your history will be deleted after 60 days.

And if you don’t have a subscription your clips and snapshots will be kept for only 3 hours, I don’t recommend using the Nest cam without a subscription plan.
  • Removing a camera from the Nest app or canceling a subscription: If you delete your Nest cam from its own app all your recorded footage will be automatically deleted, the same thing happens when you cancel your Nest aware subscription.
  • Deleting your Nest account: Also when you delete your Nest account all your recorded videos will be deleted automatically.

According to Google if you purchased Nest Aware directly from Nest, deleting your account will cancel your Nest Aware subscription at the same time, so your video history will be deleted and you’ll not be able to record until you open a new account.
  • Factory reset: When resetting your Nest camera all your recorded clips and snapshots will be deleted so if you want to save any video footage, before you factory reset create video clips or timelapses and download the files to your phone or computer.

Google doesn’t recommend factory reset as a troubleshooting method as it will erase all your video history including important recordings.

How do Nest cameras store the recorded video?

Contrary to other cameras such as Arlo, Eufy, or Wyze that have the possibility to store video locally on a micro SD card Nest cam will upload and save your recorded clips only on the cloud.

keeping them for a long time requires you a subscription that starts at 6$ a month or 60$ a year.

The camera needs to be connected to your home network and the Nest service, you have complete freedom to access the recorded video from your phone, tablet, or computer from everywhere and whenever you want.

According to Google, Nest Cam (battery) will continue to record when the power or internet goes down by saving events to its internal memory, then upload these videos to the cloud when the power and the internet go back.

The Nest Cam (wired) will also continue to record video when there’s no internet connection then upload them to the cloud when the internet is back, you can read more about local video storage in this article.
