The August Smart Lock is a great device to add to your front door as it allows you to open and close it remotely from the smartphone app, set your lock to “Auto-Lock” when you leave and “Auto-Unlock detects” when you arrive and unlocks, it also send you notifications when someone open or close your door and much more other features.

August Lock works perfectly with Alexa-enabled devices like Echo Dot, Echo Spot, Echo Show, Fire Tablet and all models offered by Amazon that support Alexa voice assistant to give you the ability to lock, unlock and check door status via simple voice commands.

In this article, I am going to show you the steps on how to connect this lock with Alexa and what are the voice commands you need to know to control this gadget, and what are the major advantages of this integration.

The advantages of the August Lock and Alexa combination.

People with moving disabilities will benefit from this integration as they will be able to open and close their doors with their voice without having to move from the couch, the elderly will have the same advantage and even more because they may struggle when using an app because of their limited understanding of technology.

Also, visually impaired people who may suffer when using a mobile app can easily lock and unlock their front doors without anyone’s help.

How to connect August Lock to Alexa?

In this chapter, I am going to show you all the instructions you need in order to enable voice control on August Lock and be able to manage it from Alexa devices.

Note 1: An August Wifi bridge is required when connecting Amazon Alexa to their servers and completing the integration with your August Smart Lock.

Note 2: You need also to set up your August lock by following the instructions on its app and have both accounts one on Alexa and another one in August.

Before doing anything I recommend turning off the “Do Not Disturb Mode” in order to receive notifications on Alexa devices, and here’s how to do it:

  1. Launch the Alexa app.
  2. Open “Devices”, then select “Echo & Alexa”.
  3. Choose your device.
  4. Select “Do Not Disturb”.
  5. Turn Do Not Disturb off.

Now you need to enable the “August Smart Home Skill” in order to connect Alexa account to your August account, so follow the instructions below to do it:

  1. Open the Amazon Alexa app on your phone or tablet.
  2. Tap on the “Devices” button at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Click on the “+” icon in the upper right corner.
  4. Then select “Add Device” and tap on “Lock”.
  5. On this list choose “August” and if you don’t find it tap Other that search for it.
  6. Click on the Continue button, then tap Enable To Use.
  7. Sign in to your August account.
  8. Then tap agree to allow Alexa access to your August account.
  9. Now your August Smart Home account has been successfully linked, so tap Close.

After tapping the Close button another screen will appear to continue the steps to find devices and connect your voice assistant, so follow the steps below to continue:

  1. Another screen will appear so tap the Discover Devices button.
  2. Alexa will look for devices to connect the process may take up to 45 seconds.
  3. Then select the Set Up Devices button at the bottom of the screen.
  4. After that tap Skip, then choose Not Right Now if you want to avoid adding extra functions.
  5. Then tap Done and your lock is successfully linked.

The unlocking feature is disabled by default on the Alexa app so if you want to unlock your door using your voice you need to follow the next steps to activate it:

  1. Open the Amazon Alexa app.
  2. Go to your August Lock.
  3. Tap on the setting icon at the upper right corner.
  4. Choose “Unlock by voice” to unlock it through a voice command.
  5. Read the popup message and then click “OK”.
  6. Create a voice code that will be required whenever you attempt to unlock your lock by voice.
  7. Now you’re able to unlock your door through your voice.

On the same screen where you activated the “Unlock by voice” feature, you can also turn on the “Unlock by app” to be able to open and close your door from the Alexa app.

How to enable the Alexa Custom Skill?

Instead of enabling the “August Smart Home”, you can set up “Alexa Custom Skill” to integrate Alexa with your August Lock, the difference is that with the Custom Skill you need to say “Alexa, ask August to… [your request]” and with the “Smart Home Skill” you’ll say “Alexa, [your request]”.

Here’s how to link it through Alexa Custom Skill:

  1. Go to the Alexa App.
  2. Select the menu icon and step ahead to “Skills”
  3. Search for “August” and select “August Home” with a red icon.
  4. Tap on the “Enable” button and login with August account details
  5. You can set a PIN code to lock and unlock with a private key.
  6. The code is generated after you link the August account with Alexa.

August Smart Home Skill voice commands.

When this skill is activated you can use your voice to lock and unlock your door remotely from your Echo devices or Alexa app by saying the commands below:

  1. “Alexa, unlock my door” (Alexa will ask you for a PIN code).
  2. “Alexa, lock my door”.
  3. “Alexa, is my front door locked?”.

As we mentioned before when you use the Alexa custom skill you need to say, Alexa, ask August then you say your request and you can rely on these commands:

  • “Alexa, ask August to unlock my door.” (Alexa will ask you for a PIN code)
  • “Alexa, ask August to lock my door.”
  • “Alexa, ask August to check the door.”
  • “Alexa, ask August to list my locks.”
  • “Alexa, ask August for help.”
  • “Alexa, ask August what’s new.”

How to change the August Smart Door Lock name on the Alexa app?

I always recommend giving a simple name to your device to let the voice assistant hear it easily without having to repeat it ten times, so you can change the gadget’s name anytime you want:

  1. Go to the Alexa app.
  2. Select Devices at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Scroll across the top and select Locks.
  4. Then choose your August Lock.
  5. Click on the gear icon at the upper right of the screen.
  6. Tap Edit Name and rename your lock.

Use simple names such as “Front Door” or “Backyard Door” or “Basement Door” and so on.

How to delete August Lock from Alexa?

Sometimes you want to move your lock to another account or you just want to delete it because you find that the voice control option is not really for you.

Perform the next steps in order to delete it:

  1. launch the Alexa app on IOS or Android devices.
  2. Tap the Devices icon at the bottom right, then select All Devices.
  3. Choose your August Lock.
  4. Tap Remove Device from the list of options on the device’s information screen.
  5. A pop-up message appears asking you to confirm, Tap OK.
  6. Now your August Lock has been removed from the Alexa account.
