Govee Light
Govee Light

Govee is a popular company that produces different products of smart lights for your home such as light bulbs, LED Strip Lights, floor lamps and much more, their products work with Wifi to allow you to control and manage them via the app or voice assistant from anywhere on the planet.

Sometimes and for some reason the Govee bulbs and strips won’t connect to Wifi so the user loses the remote control ability which may be annoying for someone who invests extra money to have smart lighting features.

Govee lighting might fail to connect to your Wifi for one of the following reasons: weak Wifi signals, you’re connected to the wrong frequency, or the app is not updated.

How to reconnect Govee lights to wifi?

In the next sections, we’re going to explore all the tips and tricks that you can try when your Govee light strips or bulbs lose Wifi connection.

  • Connect to 2.4Ghz: All Govee Wifi lights work on the 2.4 GHz frequency and they’re incompatible with the 5Ghz, So make sure to set up your lights with the 2.4Ghz channel and turn off the 5Ghz if you have a dual-band router.

Putting devices that operate on the same frequency next to your Govee lights will cause interfere with it and lead to connectivity issues more frequently.
  • Update the Govee Home app: The manufacturer releases new updates to improve the efficiency of the app and make it work better, so when the app is not updated the outdated design may lead the lights to disconnect.
  • Put the right Wifi password: You may have inserted the wrong internet password when connecting the Govee light or you may have changed it to add some security to your network, so be sure to type in the correct Wifi credentials on your smartphone and on the app too.
  • Power cycle your modem and router: If the previous solutions didn’t work for you and the lights are still offline you can try to power cycle the router and modem, this solution is my favorite when one of my devices loses internet.

Here’s how to power cycle your modem and router:
    • Turn off and unplug the modem and the router from the outlet or remove and reinsert the battery if you use a battery-powered model.
    • Wait for 60 seconds.
    • Plug in and turn on the modem and router, and allow them to completely boot up until the front panel connection lights on the modem show a steady connection.
  • Reset the modem and the router: When power cycling your modem and router haven’t changed the situation and the Govee bulbs and strips are always offline I recommend you reset them.

    Reset the router.
    • Ensure that the router is On.
    • Pick a paperclip or a needle to hold down the Reset hole at the back of the router for 30 seconds.
    • Release the Reset button and wait 30 seconds for the router to fully reset and power back on.

      Reset the modem.
    • Make sure that your modem is ON while resetting it.
    • Press and hold the Reset hole with a paperclip.
    • Release the button when the modem lights start to flicker.
    • Wait until the Internet light turns green.
  • Move the Govee bulb and strip closer to the router: The Govee bulbs and strips need to get strong and reliable Wifi signals to operate without any issue and be controlled from the app easily. So make sure to place the router and Govee lights close to each other to avoid frequent connectivity issues.

Also, ensure that the mobile phone and the bulb are in the same Wifi environment, and the Wifi connection distance is within 50 ft.

You can also add an extender or set up a mesh network if your house is big and you are forced to put the lighting device far from the router.

Note: I recommend NetGear as a good extender and TP-Link Deco or Google Mesh as reliable mesh network devices.
  • Disable VPN and firewalls: The VPN needs to be disabled temporarily when connecting the Govee light to Wifi because you can’t link your device or a mobile app to a virtual private network, the same thing for firewalls which must also be disabled.
  • Other troubleshooting solutions: The manufacturer recommends the following tips that you can implement when your Govee lights are not connecting to Wifi:
    • Delete the bulbs from Govee app and unplug it for a few hours, then reconnect to your Wi-Fi.
    • Make sure the bulb is powered on. Please switch the bulbs on and off 5 times to enter Breathing mode.
    • Delete the strip light from the Govee Home App and unplug it for 10 minutes.
    • Reset the strip light. (Reset: When powered on, press the middle button on the control box four times while holding the power button).
    • Enable your phone hotspot and test if the strip light will work with it.

Final words.

These kinds of smart lights will add so much comfort and convenience to your smart home and you can take this article as a solution that you can use when your Govee light strips, bulbs, or any other model face some troubles when connecting to the Wifi.
