Blink Camera Not Connecting To Wifi? – Tips To Fix It.

Blink

Blink smart security cameras can help you keep your home safe and also allow you to access the device remotely and see what’s going on in your property anytime from your phone or tablet, also send you notifications and record and store clips on the cloud when they detect motions.

Like any smart gadget, these cams require a stable and reliable internet connection in order to operate perfectly but sometimes they go offline which may cause them to lose the majority of their features such as the ones we mentioned before, So why do Blink cameras go offline?

All Blink cameras except the Mini model are connected to a sync Module that acts as a hub or base station and when this device disconnects it causes the cameras to lose internet.

The long-distance between the sync Module and the router or camera may be the cause of this problem, also when the camera runs out of battery or the Firmware is not updated connection issues will occur.

Our main topic in the following chapters of this article is to teach you all the tips and tricks that you can use to get your Blink camera and the Sync module connected again.

Check your internet subscription.

Maybe your camera is not connecting just because your internet subscription has expired and you’re not aware of it, so check your subscription and try to connect from another device to make sure that the issue is only coming from your cam or the Sync Module.

Check the battery.

Blink cams work with 2 AA lithium batteries that can last up to two years of course depending on the usage, and when these batteries are close to death the camera will lose some of its power and can’t attract reliable internet signals to operate efficiently.

So make sure to replace them at the right time to avoid this problem and adjust the camera settings correctly if you want to conserve the batteries for a longer time.

Power cycle the Sync Module.

When you see a red light in your Sync Module that means it’s offline, here I recommend starting by power cycling this hub as it can solve the problem and you can follow the steps below to do it:

  1. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  2. Wait for 10 seconds.
  3. Then plug in the power cord again and turn your Sync Module on.
  4. The device will reboot and then reconnect within 45 seconds.

If you see a solid blue with a solid green light that means your Sync Module is connected, so the problem has been fixed.

Reset the Sync Module.

If power cycling this device hasn’t resolved the issues and the Sync Module is still offline, you can go and reset it because a factory reset is considered a good solution for connectivity problems.

  1. Locate the reset button at the side of this hub next to the USB port.
  2. Pick a needle or a paperclip and press and hold the reset button for 5 seconds.

After 15 or 30 seconds a blinking blue light and solid green light appear at the front of the Sync Module which means the hub has been reset, now you need to go and delete and reinstall it again on the Blink app, and here’s how to do it:

  1. Open the Blink app on your mobile or tablet.
  2. Click on the “?” icon on the “Sync Module Offline” banner.
  3. Tap the red button that shows “Delete Sync Module”.
  4. Scan or enter the module’s serial number, then tap Delete.
  5. Go back to the home screen and click on the + sign in the upper right.
  6. Choose “Blink wireless camera system”.
  7. Scan or enter the module’s serial number again.
  8. Select your Blink system, then tap “Discover Device”.
  9. Click on “Join, then Select “Done”.

These steps will bring this gadget online as well as your camera if the problem is coming from the Sync Module.

Power Cycle Your modem and router.

When the Sync module is not the cause of the issue and it’s working perfectly but your camera is still offline try to power cycle your modem and router.

To power cycle your router or modem:

  1. Turn off and unplug the modem and the router from the outlet or remove and reinsert the battery if you use a battery-powered model.
  2. Wait for one minute (It’s important that your router’s power is fully reset).
  3. Plug in and turn on the modem and router, and allow them to completely boot up until the front panel connection lights on the modem show a steady connection.

Move the router and the Sync Module.

According to Blink, the Sync Module should be within 100 feet of the router and camera and the goal is to have three bars of signal connectivity in the Sync Module and each camera as shown in the Blink app.

So make sure to move them closer and if you’re using the Blink Mini which connects directly to the router so you need to put the router closer to it.

Reset the modem and the router.

The next solution that you can implement to fix the problem after trying power cycling and moving the router is to perform a factory reset on your modem and router:

Reset the modem.

  1. Turn on your modem while resetting it.
  2. Press and hold the Reset button with a paperclip.
  3. Release the button when the modem lights start to flicker.
  4. Wait until the Internet light to turns green.

Reset the router.

  1. Make sure the router is turned on.
  2. Pick a paper clip to hold down the Reset button at the back of the router for half a minute.
  3. Release the Reset button and wait 30 seconds for the router to fully reset and power back on.

Reset the Router From the Configuration Page.

  1. Type your router’s IP address into any web browser’s search field.
  2. Enter your username and password when prompted.
  3. Go to System or System Tools.
  4. Look for Restore or Factory Default.
  5. Tap Restore or Reset and OK to confirm.
  6. Wait for the router to reboot.

Note: If you changed the password when resetting the router or modem make sure to update it on the Blink app in order to get the Wifi connection.

Use the 2.4 GHz channel.

Blink cams and Sync Module can work only on the 2.4 GHz channel so make sure to switch your router on this frequency when connecting these devices, If your Blink system is repeatedly switched over to a 5 GHz network and becomes unresponsive, it may be helpful to turn off the 5 GHz network entirely.

At the same time try to avoid installing devices that work on the same frequency next to your Blink devices because it will interfere with it and cause connectivity issues frequently.

Update the app.

Connectivity problems may be caused just because your app is not updated so make sure to set it to be updated automatically, and here’s how to do it:

Important: Make sure that your device has sufficient space in order for the Blink app to be updated successfully.

To automatically update apps on your iOS device:

  1. Start the Settings app.
  2. Select General, then Tap Software Update.
  3. Choose Automatic Updates, then turn on Automatic Updates by swiping the button to the right.

To automatically update apps on your Android device:

  1. Go to the Google Play Store app.
  2. Select Menu and then Settings.
  3. Choose Auto-update apps.
  4. Select an option:
    • Over any network to update apps using either Wi-Fi or mobile data.
    • Over Wi-Fi only to update apps only when connected to Wi-Fi.

If you tried all the solutions I showed you before and your Blink camera is still offline go and reset it maybe the factory reset process will get it back online again.

Note: Resetting is recommended only for Blink Mini because it doesn’t require a Sync Module to connect.

Reset Blink Mini cam:

  1. Pick a paperclip or a needle.
  2. Press and hold the reset button for more than 5 seconds.
  3. A red and blue lights will flash rapidly shortly before the button is released.
  4. The blue light will then slowly blink, which indicates the camera is ready to be added to a system.

Now go and re-add your camera to the Blink system and connect it again to your router.

Disable VPN and firewalls.

If you’re using a VPN and firewalls make sure to disable them temporarily when connecting the Sync Module or your Blink Mini to the router in order to be able to connect.

Add an Extender or a mesh network.

Sometimes your router is too far from the Sync Module or the camera and you can’t move it and make it closer.

In this case, I recommend adding an extender like “NETGEAR” to extend the Wifi signals and let it reach all your gadgets, or setting up a mesh network like “Google Mesh” as it’s considered more effective than an extender.

Check the internet bandwidth.

Sometimes the internet bandwidth inside your home is the main issue and opting for a plan with higher upload and download speed is the right solution for you.

But before upgrading your internet plan disconnect all gadgets that use the internet such as your TV, Computer, Smartphone, and check if your cam is back online, if it’s the case your bandwidth is the cause of the problem.

Conclusion.
