7 Tips To Fix Kasa Smart Plug Not Connecting To Wifi.

Kasa smart plug is a very popular device made by TP-Link, it is a small electrical gadget that helps you automate and remotely control your home appliances like electric kettle, fans, humidifier, coffee maker, etc.

This outlet offers many features to allow you to easily manage your devices and increase the comfort and convenience at the same time inside your home, such as voice and app control, schedule creation and timers to automatically turn appliances on and off, monitor energy and reduce electric bills, and much more.

This plug works very well but sometimes people say that it’s not responding or not connecting to Wifi.

In this blog post, I will guide you through the solutions you can implement whenever your Kasa plug is unresponsive or not connecting to Wifi.

Note: You can take a look at this article to see how the Kasa plug operates without an internet connection.

How to Fix Kasa Smart Plug Not Responding or Not Connecting to Wifi?

There are many tips that can help you reconnect the Kasa plug or recover from an unresponsive state like updating the firmware, restarting your router, resetting the device, reducing interference, plugging the device into another wall outlet, etc. and my goal is to explain them all in detail and help you fix your issue.

Tip 1: Power cycle the Kasa plug.

The first thing I recommend you to do is power cycle your outlet because this troubleshooting step is easy to do and can help the device recover from an unresponsive state and reconnect to the modem.

Here’s how to power cycle your device:

  1. Unplug your Plug from the wall outlet.
  2. Wait at least 15 seconds.
  3. Then plug it back in.

Power cycling the modem is also a good troubleshooting tip to do if your Kasa plug is suffering from connectivity issues as this step will fix slow wireless connections, and improve Wifi signals.

  1. Unplug the power cord from the outlet.
  2. Wait for 60 seconds.
  3. Turn it back on or plug it back into the electrical outlet and wait 30 seconds.

Tip 2: Check the circuit breaker and the wall outlet.

Before checking the wall outlet, make sure the circuit breaker associated with the wall outlet you’re plugging the Kasa plug into is turned on (If it is off, turn it on to solve your problem).

Common causes when a wall socket stops working include failure of the internal outlet connections, which is common in older outlets that no longer hold the plugs tightly, you can check the voltage coming from the outlet by using a multimeter which gives you the most accurate estimate.

If you notice that no power is coming from the outlet, I recommend you get an electrician to check what’s going on or just plug the device into another wall outlet and see if it’s back to the work.

Tip 3: Connect to the right frequency and reduce interference.

The connectivity issue may be caused by Wi-Fi interference or you are simply not connecting the device to the correct frequency channel (Kasa smart plug only works on the 2.4 GHz channel).

Frequency issues arise when you have a dual-band router that supports 5GHz and 2.4GHz at the same time, so be sure to connect the outlet to the correct frequency and turn off the 5GHz during the setup process.

Another thing you need to consider is that the advantage of a 2.4 GHz is that it has a longer range and can penetrate solid objects better, but the disadvantage is that it is more vulnerable to interference because many smart home devices operate on the same frequency.

To reduce radio interference, be sure to turn off connected gadgets that you are not currently using and move devices that may be causing interference.

Tip 4: Update the app and the device firmware.

Firmware and app updates are essential if you want your Kasa plug to work properly, as these updates will fix existing bugs discovered by the manufacturer and improve poor performance and resolve potential issues caused by the app or the outlet.

Generally speaking, the firmware is updated automatically but you can do it manually, and here’s how:

  1. Open the Kasa app on your smartphone and log in to your account.
  2. Tap on the menu button at the top left corner of the screen.
  3. Then click on Settings.
  4. Select Firmware Update.
  5. If any firmware updates are available, they will be displayed on this screen.
  6. If there is a new firmware version, please click the corresponding firmware and the Kasa plug will be updated automatically.
  7. Don’t use the plug until the firmware update is finished.

Here’s how to update the Kasa app on Android:

  1. Open The Google Play store.
  2. Tap the profile icon at the top right.
  3. Tap Manage apps & device
  4. Under “Updates available”, tap “See details”.
  5. Then tap on update next to the Kasa app.

Follow these steps to update the Kasa app on IOS:

  1. Open the App Store.
  2. Tap your profile icon at the top of the screen.
  3. Scroll to see pending updates and release notes.
  4. Tap Update next to the Kasa app.

Tip 5: Boost Wifi signals.

Weak Wifi signals are another reason that can cause your Kasa smart plug to disconnect and it can happen due to many reasons including your router being too far away from devices, physical interferences like thick walls, floors, or other appliances, too many people or devices connected to one network.

Here are some easy ways to fix a Weak WiFi signal:

  1. Update your router firmware.
  2. Find a better placement for your router.
  3. Replace the router’s Antenna.
  4. Buy a WiFi extender (booster).
  5. Buy a new modern router.
  6. Set up a mesh network.

Tip 6: Update Wifi information.

When changing your Internet password and Wi-Fi information during a router reset process, you will need to update this information on your Kasa app and Kasa Smart Plug in order to let it connect to your home network.

Tip 7: Reset the Kasa Smart Plug.

Factory reset is the last solution with us in this article. I always recommend this solution when someone is facing a problem with his smart device and it is considered a good troubleshooting step.

The only thing you need to know is that this step will set the Kasa plug to its original factory settings and it will erase all your data and information.

Here’s how to reset the Kasa Plug:

  1. Hold down the Power button until the indicator light blinks slowly and then rapidly.
  2. The rapid flashing shows the device is reset and now in setup mode.
  3. Now start the setup process all over again.

Final Thoughts.

So these were all the tips and tricks you can implement to reconnect the Kasa Smart Plug or help it recover from an unresponsive state, and I hope that one of the solutions provided has helped you solve your problem.
